First Day of Class

Yesterday was the first day of class. One always looks for augurs on these occasions, and of course one sees what one is prepared to see and ignores what one doesn't expect. In my current rather jaundiced view of the University of California, here's what I saw: a lecture hall that was designed to hold 150 students that was filled with 175 students on a very hot day; a lecture that started with a vigorous appeal (dictated by my department chair) for students to please not take this class; and a lecturer who has no job security.

In class I can do enthusiasm, because I really dig microbiology, but optimism is a challenge.
